A lot of Japanese investors have borrowed money at very low rates and put it into American treasuries, securities, and crypto. As Japanese rates go up, the yen becomes more attractive and worth more, which means those USD assets need to be liquidated and converted back into yen because the margins become so razor thin that they could lose their ass.

When people say 'money returning to japan' do they mean japan frantically selling us bonds and us stocks and reinvesting it into japanese bonds? Or would even japanese stocks benefit? I was under the impression that the carry trade mostly just involves scalping interest rates on treasuries so stocks should be less affected. So i think mostly us bonds and with them the usd itself should plummet. Why do people say stocks will plummet too?

This is the best sign you can get that we’re not in a fucking bubble. Last couple of years I’ve been doing the exact opposite of what the mainstream news outlets say. Remember when they claimed oil could hit 100 usd a few months back and now they’re talking about a grim outlook? Remember april? Sentiment changes so fucking quickly and once something is in mainstream it’s more often than not time to bet against what they’re saying.

I wouldn't fullport but it's a great US defensive sector hedge going into next year's uncertainty. It is USD only so if the dollar weakens further you will miss out on international gains. I would keep some spy/qqq (in case growth stocks still do fine), add a bit of gold and some international etf (both to hedge against dollar depreciation, could even add broader commodities). Then bonds but they still look terrible or just keep some cash in high yield savings account. This will probably underperform spy if next year turns out fine.

If you want I can send yah a referral link. We both get $100 if you open & fund an account Β―\\\_(ツ)\_/Β― \--- Basically the idea is just have enough USD (or CAD there) so you never dip into the margin. Since it is a margin account tho - you don't have to wait for settlement which is nice. You can buy, sell, buy, sell, buy, sell using the same capital. You won't pay any margin fees / interest on that. You only pay margin fees if you're positions are larger than your collateral. If you sell - you immediately get the profit (or loss) credited to your balance (and you can reuse it again, without incurring any fees).

I'm exclusively USD in this account right now. I used to have a bunch of CAD in there - but I didn't wanna risk any of that so I moved it to my bank. You can have both. It's a margin account. I don't convert them back and forth. I can collateralize USD positions with CAD if I want (pay the margin fee tho - which is VERY high). That's a downside - borrowing money is expensive. I think that they charge like 10%. Basically - have the cash in the account. You can have both USD and CAD in the account. If you buy with USD (on a margin account) and have the USD there - it'll just use that and no conversion fees, no borrow fees, etc, etc.

Do you keep USD in the account or do you do their automatic CAD - USD conversion?
