Why Are People So Negative on HIMS? “No Moat” Argument Feels Overblown
I’ve been seeing a lot of bearish takes on HIMS lately, and the most common criticism seems to be that the company has no moat and will get crushed by competition. I’m genuinely trying to understand this take because it feels overly simplistic. Yes, telehealth is competitive. Yes, a lot of companies can sell ED meds, hair loss treatments, etc. But HIMS isn’t just standing still or doing the bare minimum. They’re rolling out at-home lab testing, expanding into menopause / perimenopause care, and even getting into peptides. Those are not trivial add-ons. I honestly haven’t seen many competitors offering at-home labs at scale as part of a broader subscription health platform. To me, the moat argument misses a few things: Ecosystem > single product. Someone who does labs + ongoing treatment + subscriptions is way stickier than someone buying generic meds once. Menopause care is massively underserved and growing fast. Peptides and personalized health feel like early innings, not late-stage commoditized stuff. Brand matters more than people admit in healthcare. I get the concerns around: Marketing spend Margins Competition from Ro, Amazon, traditional healthcare, etc. But saying “no moat” feels lazy. Not every moat is patents or exclusive tech — sometimes it’s distribution, trust, brand, and integration. So I’m genuinely curious: Is the negativity mostly about valuation and past stock performance? Do people just lump HIMS in with every other telehealth company? Or is there something structurally broken here that I’m missing? Not trying to pump — just trying to understand why sentiment is so bad when the company seems to be expanding into harder, more defensible areas, not easier ones. Would love to hear real bear cases beyond “competition bad.”
