It’s technically a profit but it is an opportunity cost, and if you want to hold the shares long term and have to buy them back at a higher price, the loss is ultimate a realized loss and it will cut into your portfolio growth over time if you don’t manage your risk correctly and are having to buy shares back for more than you sold the premiums for. The point of covered calls for me is free income in a tax sheltered account to replace having to make contributions from my normal income, I don’t have a lot of dry powder and try to stretch limited resources to max growth, so mispricing calls is a costly mistake that can wipe out a lot of gains and potentially make me have to buy fewer shares and not be able to sell calls on that stock for a while. There are kind of two metrics you can look at, share count and total value, obviously you want to increase both, and if you use call premiums to buy more shares, they can act like dividends on steroids, but you lose that multiplier effect if you have to buy fewer shares back, even if you still technically are growing, you’re not optimizing and you might as well just be doing index and chill.
